BBT Charting Protocol
Take your temperature at the same time every morning, immediately upon waking, before sitting up, talking, drinking water, or doing anything else. Even small activities can elevate your temperature and skew the reading. Record the temperature in your tracking app or on a paper chart.
Before ovulation, temperatures typically cluster in a lower range (97.0–97.5°F / 36.1–36.4°C). After ovulation, progesterone causes a sustained shift to a higher range (97.6–98.0°F / 36.4–36.7°C). When you see three or more consecutive days at the higher level, ovulation is confirmed.
Common BBT Pitfalls
Inconsistent wake times (more than 30 minutes of variation) can create misleading data. Alcohol consumption the night before often elevates morning temperature. Illness, poor sleep, and room temperature changes can all introduce noise. If your chart looks messy, focus on the overall pattern rather than individual readings.
Cervical Mucus Monitoring
Cervical mucus monitoring is the only free, real-time method of identifying your fertile window as it opens. It detects approaching fertility before OPKs do because mucus changes are driven by rising estrogen, which increases before the LH surge.
The Mucus Progression
After your period: little to no mucus (dry). Early follicular phase: sticky, tacky, white or yellowish. Approaching ovulation: creamy, lotion-like, increasing in quantity. Peak fertility: clear, stretchy, slippery, egg-white consistency (EWCM). After ovulation: thick, sticky, or dry again as progesterone dominates.
How to Check
The simplest approach: before urinating, swipe clean toilet paper across the vaginal opening and observe what you see. Is it dry? Sticky? Stretchy? Clear? For more detailed assessment, you can collect a sample with clean fingers and stretch it between thumb and forefinger. Fertile-quality mucus will stretch an inch or more without breaking.
Begin having intercourse when you first notice wet, slippery, or egg-white mucus. This mucus indicates your fertile window is open and sperm survival conditions are optimal. Continue through the day after your mucus shifts back to dry or sticky.
Technology and Wearable Trackers
