Best Prenatal Vitamins for Before Pregnancy: 10 Options Compared

📚 10 min read📅 June 2026💛 Medically reviewed

The best prenatal for TTC contains methylfolate (not just folic acid), at least 200 mg DHA, iron, iodine, and ideally some choline. No single prenatal has everything in optimal amounts — most are weak on choline and vitamin D. Our top picks: Ritual Essential Prenatal for best overall formulation, FullWell Prenatal for most complete nutrient profile (including choline), and Nature Made Prenatal + DHA for best budget option.

What to Look For

NutrientMinimum for TTCWhy It MattersMost Prenatals Have
Folate (methylfolate preferred)400–800 mcgNeural tube defect prevention; methylfolate works regardless of MTHFR statusMost have folic acid (adequate) or methylfolate (better)
DHA (omega-3)200 mg+Fetal brain and eye development~50% include DHA; many require a separate softgel
Iron18–27 mgPrevents anemia; blood volume nearly doubles in pregnancyMost include it, but some “gentle” formulas omit it
Iodine150–220 mcgThyroid function and fetal brain developmentOnly ~50% include it — check your label
Choline450 mg (target)Neural tube closure, brain developmentAlmost none include adequate amounts (typically 0–55 mg)
Vitamin D2,000+ IUImmune function, implantation, bone healthMost include 400–1,000 IU (insufficient for many women)
B122.6 mcg+Works with folate in DNA synthesis; critical for vegans/vegetariansMost include adequate amounts

The choline problem

Almost no prenatal vitamin provides adequate choline (450 mg/day target). FullWell is the notable exception. If your prenatal doesn't include at least 200 mg choline, you have two options: eat 2 eggs daily (each provides ~147 mg) or add a separate choline supplement (250–450 mg/day). Choline works alongside folate in neural tube closure and is critical for fetal brain development.

Our recommendation

Best overall: FullWell Prenatal — the only prenatal with meaningful choline, methylfolate, DHA, iron, and iodine all in one. Worth the premium price if budget allows.

Best value: Nature Made Prenatal + DHA — covers the essentials at $15/month. Add a separate choline supplement and vitamin D (2,000 IU).

Start at least 1–3 months before TTC. The most important thing is consistency — the best prenatal is the one you actually take every day.
